Fortune Cookies appear to have originated in Japan, but more are made each year in the United States than anywhere else. Some think they originated in San Fransisco. It seems the cookie caught on after WWII in California, when military personnel returning from the Pacific first encountered them in local Asian restaurants and began requesting them when they returned home in other parts of the U.S. Fortunes can be poetic, prophetic, predictive or advisory. The fun experience of a fortune cookie, as another amusing idea for place settings or party favors, inspired us to make paper versions in a variety of patterns. Complete with instructions and a space for you to type or hand write your own fortune, these always bring a tiny bit of delight.
